Really, will Artificial Intelligence fire designers?
So last year, Midjourney and lots of other Artificial intelligence design tools became popular. Since then, every four market days, a designer asks if Ai will take over our job as designers. What do you think?
Well, here’s what I think.
Whenever I come across this question, I’m reminded of not so long ago, when Canva became a thing. People raved about Canva. Some said it’s the end of graphic designers. Power to businesses! But what happened? After a while, we realized only designers can make the most effective use of Canva. That realization hit many like a ton of bricks.
That is precisely the situation with Midjourney and other Ai tools. I dunno how but everybody just seems to forget that these things are just tools and you need some skills to use some tools effectively. The way Midjourney and other AI tools work are you queue in a couple of very descriptive keywords and you get really amazing results. But lemme ask, who is in the best position to know the most descriptive keywords to feed the Ai? Who if not a designer?
This whole thought of Ai taking over our job is funny because it’s just like saying a new guitar will make musicians go out of business. Only musicians have the needed skill set to use this guitar effectively; likewise, only designers have the skill set needed to use these tools effectively.
The only thing I think will happen is that these Ai tools will change the way designers work. We need to adapt to these new tools. That’s where the real threat is. Think of typewriters and computers.
Until soon, The Crazy Badass out.
